An Illustrated Guide to Falling February 5, 2010

Alice’s fall down the rabbit hole was sparked in part by her “being tired of sitting by her sister” while she read a book without any pictures in it. “And what’s the use of a book without pictures,” thought Alice.
At this point – three weeks into the EHR implementation – I echo Alice’s sentiments. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the whole process illustrated in a handy Guide to Implementation. Instead, we are getting jigsaw piece glimpses, knowing that the piece in our hand fits in somewhere, sometime.
This last week Jason from ePartners camped in what we call The Purchasing Department. Purchasing may be a misnomer; warehouse, supplies, materials might be a better name. Nonetheless, expect to see significant changes in the way that we requisition and order supplies, receive items into inventory, and how we access the “things” we need from the stacks down in Purchasing. Our current process is completely manual, but it won’t be after implementation – can you say scan guns, bar codes and accurate counts?
Alice’s sentiments above may also have meant that she was tired of doing the same old same old. She didn’t know all the options, details and events which surrounded jumping down the rabbit hole – no illustrated guide to falling – but she knew something had to change.
Some changes are an adventure. And some lead to significant patient improvement. Once high tech, can you imagine transferring patients as illustrated below?

Do you mean that this is not the appropriate way to transfer a patient from one bed to another??!* Wow, I better catch up on the times and treat my back better than I have
Darla, you are doing a nice job in posting and making it fun to read as well. Thank you!
Nice, Rhonda. And I posted the picture thinking how uncomfortable it would be for the patient … silly me!
